New OSHA Heat Safety Standards Are Coming: Is Your Business Ready?

The U.S. Department of Labor and OSHA are finalizing a federal heat injury and illness prevention rule that will apply to indoor and outdoor workplaces across the country.

What's in the New Rule?

Initial Trigger

Heat index of 80°F+ requires water, shade, and basic training.

High Heat Trigger

Heat index of 90°F+ triggers required rest breaks, monitoring, and enhanced protections.

Employer Requirements

  • Develop a written Heat Illness and Injury Prevention Plan (HIIPP)
  • Ensure access to drinking water, rest, and shaded or cooled areas
  • Implement acclimatization protocols for new/returning employees
  • Train workers and supervisors on prevention and response
  • Keep records of heat-related incidents and response measures

Why This Matters in Florida

With Florida law now blocking local heat protection rules (HB 433), the OSHA standard will be the main safeguard for workers. Employers must prepare now to stay compliant and keep employees safe.

What Employers Should Do Now
